Professional vs Senior Frontend Developer: The thin but clear line

"Senior" is one of the most abused words in tech. One company calls someone with 2 years of experience Senior, another demands 7 years for the same title. Result: titles mean nothing, and people interview by gut feeling instead of clear criteria.

This post compares two real competency profiles on Verifolio — Frontend Developer (Professional) and Frontend Developer (Senior) — based on the SFIA 9 framework. Not comparing years of experience, but comparing responsibility, scope of influence, and how problem-solving differs between these two levels.

  • CNSL (Consultancy) — L3: Consulting. Senior starts playing a technical consulting role for other teams or stakeholders, not just "doing what's asked".

So where are you, and what do you need to reach Senior?

If you're at Professional and want to reach Senior, here are the focus areas (in priority order):

1. Upgrade PROG from L4 to L5 — most important

This is the dividing line. You need to demonstrate:

  • Taking technical responsibility for the entire development process (not just writing code)
  • Planning and driving the team's software construction activities
  • Measuring and monitoring application of standards (code review isn't just feedback, it's ensuring quality)
  • Contributing to organisational policies/standards (not just following, but shaping)

2. Upgrade 10 skills from L3 to L4

From "autonomous on own work" to "ensuring quality of others' work". Specifically:

  • SWDN: Start designing complex architectures, not just implementing from specs
  • TEST: Design test strategies, not just write test cases
  • RELM: Plan releases, manage deployment risks
  • RLMT: Manage stakeholder expectations, influence product decisions
  • PDSV: Mentor juniors, design learning paths for the team

Conversely, someone with 7 years who only does assigned tasks, never leads reviews or makes architecture decisions, remains at Professional.

SFIA also doesn't talk about soft skills (communication, leadership, conflict resolution) — but to actually achieve L5 PROG or L4 RLMT in practice, you need those skills. The competency framework is just a baseline, not the whole story.

Conclusion: Title matters less than responsibility

After comparing 15 skills, the answer to "How do Professional and Senior differ?" isn't "Senior is better", but:

Professional = Works autonomously on complex tasks, accountable for own output, contributes to team decisions.

Senior = Takes technical responsibility for the team, ensures quality of others' work, contributes to organisational policies, and starts consulting for other teams.

If your company calls you "Senior" but you don't do the above, it's just a title. If you're doing the above but don't have the title yet, you're ready — you just need to prove it with concrete evidence.
